Five Questions and a Song is the weekly column where we delve into the minds of new musical talent and ask them to share one of their tracks for your listening pleasure.

Today we’re talking to Julie Edwards of Deap Vally, a powerful rock duo with a screaming love of the blues. Drummer Julie met singer and guitarist Lindsey Troy in crochet class (where she fashioned a scarf) and shortly afterwards they decided to form a band, playing gigs around their hometown of LA and, eventually, around the world. Their explosive debut album Sistrionix was released earlier this summer and you can get a taste of their unapologetic sound with the single ‘Baby I Call Hell’ below. Deap Vally plays Reading Festival next Friday and Leeds next Saturday.

Tell us about your band.

Two people. Both women. Heavy rock and roll. Sparkle and sass.

What inspires you as musicians?

Inspiring others! Origami! Crochet! Magic!

What blues musician has influenced you the most and why?

Screamin' Jay Hawkins. He has such an uninterrupted creative flow and still maintains a high level of taste and invention.

How would you describe the LA music scene?

‪We've been on tour for the better part of last year, so we're completely out of the loop. But LA is the size of a small country, so there are hundreds of different scenes. There's some great raw psych and punk happening, like Fidlar and JJUUJJUU and Jeffertiti's Nile and Trash Talk.

What can you tell us about this song?

It's the first song we ever wrote as a band!
