Here at Oh Comely we like to herald independent makers, and that’s why we love Secret Emporium. Here's their story.

Secret Garden Party – renowned for its fancy dress and popularity with designers and creatives – had a problem; its retail was woefully uninspiring, touting boring tat and not much else besides. In 2010, after working individually with the festival for a time, Lucy Peacock and Tess Acheson jumped to the rescue. Together they pulled together designers they already knew to create an Aladdin’s cave of creativity to captivate SGP’s discerning demographic. Secret Emporium was born.

These two are something of a dream team; Lucy is a jewelry designer and Tess is a dab hand at curating. And, since their initial SGP appearance, they now host the Secret Emporium at a handful of festivals, as well as running an annual Christmas market and various pop-up events.

Although the primary focus of the venture is to support existing designers, Tess and Lucy also trawl graduate shows each year, offering scholarships to a number of young designers. This allows inspiring youngsters free space to take their work to some of the UK’s biggest festivals and to gain the much needed exposure they deserve.

So if you’re heading to Bestival this weekend, be sure to visit Secret Emporium and pat Lucy and Tess on the back! At home and online, visit their shop here.

Fight the potential extinction of the handwritten letter with this Mixed Messages noteset by New York stationary company, The Great Lakes Good. Having been an endangered species since the invention of social media, we couldn’t think of a better way to keep letter writing alive. This beautifully designed pack of six die cut shield cards will help to get the message across in its purest form, whether a simple ‘Hello, Hello, Hello’ or a ‘Thank U, Thank U’.

Buy the set at Couverture and The Garbstore for a healthy £13 and save the vanishing ‘Just a Note to Say’ today!

Scrolling through Best Made Company's online shop is a delight in itself – you’ll find everything you need for your inner lumber jack; from compasses, pocket knives and hand-crafted axes (the tool that launched the site thanks to Peter Buchanan-Smith’s ‘need for a better axe’ in life) to motivational felt badges and woolly warm camp blankets.

But it is the Seamless & Steadfast Enamel Steel crockery ($35 for a set of two plates) that we’re after this week. Made using World War Two era machinery, the renowned ‘Famous X’ and compass rose is baked directly to the plate and the rim is double dipped with enamel. Not your average plate ey? We say, swap your paper plates for a set of these at your next picnic so you can be ready for anything.

Find them here, and if you’re stuck for ideas as to what to serve on them try: ‘Cee Dub’s Dutch Oven and Other Camp Cookin’: A Back Country Guide to Outdoor Cooking Spiced with Tall Tales’ for belt-busting recipes with lashings of dry wit.

You’re taking an afternoon stroll through the woods to the tune of some beautiful birdsong, the sun’s shining and you’ve got your new wellies on. Suddenly, you’re so charmed by the moment that you want in on the melody. And we’ve just the thing: the Bird Call Trio set (£37.50) from Cow&Co – this handcarved set includes three wooden instruments designed to mimic the tuneful calls of the Goldfinch, the Great Tit (yep) and the Nuthatch. There’re instructions and tips for calling these little beauties so that you might call your own bird army to attention if you fancy, one which hopefully doesn’t transform into a terrifying Hitchcockian nightmare. Watch out for the flapping, ahh!

But seriously though, we’re very happy this exists – buy it at Cow&Co, or upgrade to the Bird Call Quartet (£43) if you want to take things further.

This week we’re choosing from the range of 'spragrances' created by &otherstories – an excellently branded fashion store from the creators of H&M. Seemingly the Willy Wonka of the body mist world, the brand has created delicious concoctions with names like Rose Revival, Fig Fiction and Lemon Daydream, that sound good enough to eat. Our favourite is the vibrant Couture Carnival – encapsulating “fruit cocktails” and “dancing ‘till dawn”, with notes of raspberry, guava, white patchouli and black amber. Not quite as revolutionary as lickable wallpaper, but we reckon pretty close.

Buy the body mists for £12 each and view their lovely tumblr-style website at &otherstories.

Come forth oh season of sunshine! We long for the smell of suncream and the freedom to wear flip-flops! And if the sun’s rays ever last long enough for us to call it summer, we’d also wish for something beautiful to protect our bonse with. Enter The Brim Label’s summer collection of hand-made printed hats. Their vintage-explorer style makes them just as perfect for jungle trekking as they are for wandering to the local pub in. We like this floral number (namely Vintage #10, £75) and the nautical navy stripe (also £75), especially. Both are made using salvaged leather and cotton, and there are never more than 10 hats made in one print.

Peruse the collection here: The Brim Label

In Issue 15's Pretty Lovely pages we spoke to designer Anna Kreeger about her leather bag label M.Hulot. She told us all about her love of hard saddle, vegetable tanned leathers that oozed character and how the throwaway culture of the High Street inspired her to create a characterful collection that is made to last.

If we had a bag by M.Hulot we would want to wear it everyday for ever and lucky for you, Anna has kindly given you the chance to do exactly that by giving us a beautiful green and tan Strapped Howe Clutch to give away.

To be in it to win it, write in to [email protected] and tell us about the possession that you'll never throw out.

You can read the full interview on page 20 of Issue 15 which is in shops now.
